Gallery and exhibition design and graphic design by WHITECUBE

Interpretation planning and research: Toni Roberts

The Factory Viewing Deck gallery communicates the coin making process in a coherent and engaging manner through the design of the physical environment

and interactive displays. The exhibition provides a rare insight into a significant manufacturing environment, maximising its appeal and impact as a tourism and education resource. The basis of the design approach was to distil the coin making process into a simple diagram which is reinforced on primary wall graphics, floor treatment and touch screen navigation. The overarching schema of the colour coded diagram drives the whole design and enables visitors to make sense of each of the views into the factory. The viewing windows have been increased to create expansive areas, complemented by touch screens that interpret the views. These are accessible in five languages and the housing is designed for access by those in wheelchairs and children. The videos presented in the touch screens make processes visible by close up filming of the factory in action.
